The secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has issued a report on the current status of emissions reductions of members of the convention. The “stocktake” has some good news: commitments under the Paris Agreement (called NDCs, Nationally Determined Contributions) can reduce temperature increases. The NDCs would keep increases to 1.7 degrees Celsius, just above the 1.5 C that parties committed to in Paris. The report also has another notable feature: it calls for “phase down” of fossil fuels, a term that was hotly debated (pardon the pun) in Glasgow in 2021 and is likely to come up again in Dubai in 2023.
